5 Steps to an Organized Closet

Updated: Feb 16, 2022

Having a beautiful, organized closet can feel like complete and total bliss. Seeing your clothes and shoes displayed in a neat and tidy way can make any closet look great! No matter what kind of closet you have, you can make it great with some simple organization strategies.

1. Clear Everything Out

Starting an organization project can often be the hardest part. The best way to begin is to simply take EVERYTHING out of your closet and put it in a pile. It doesn't have to be pretty, you just need to have a designated space (on your bed or on the floor) where you can use as your 'workspace'.

2. Clean Your Closet

Most people forget this step but while everything is emptied out of your closet, grab some cleaning supplies and give your closet a good cleaning. This could also be the perfect opportunity to give your closet a much needed makeover. Check out this page for some fun and easy closet DIY projects.

3. Declutter Your Wardrobe

This can often times be the hardest part of the process. Declutter your clothes by sorting them into 2 piles: Keep or Donate. Only keep the things that you absolutely love! If you haven't worn something in over a year, it might be time to donate it to someone who would use it more than you. Using a simple box or bag, bring your donate pile to a local donation drop-off such as Goodwill.

4. Designate Your Spaces

Before you put your clothes and shoes back into your closet, designate where you would like each type of items to go. Draw it out on a piece of paper if you have to. If you know that you have a lot of shirts and blouses, designate a top rack with enough space for those items. If you have a lot of shoes but don't have a good way to store them, pause for a moment and do some shopping. It might be time to invest in some organizational storage (IKEA has some great choices!)

5. Reassemble Your Closet

Finally, it's time to reassemble your closet! Take you 'keep' items and put them into their designated areas. Play around with different systems that work best for you:

Color Coding: Color coding your closet is a great way to find things easily in your wardrobe. First assemble by type of clothing (shirts, shorts, skirts), then assemble by color of clothing. This will help clean up your closet in no time!

Seasonal: Do you have a lot of seasonal clothing? Try keeping all of your 'off-season' clothing items (like ski jackets, winter boots) in one place. Change out your wardrobe by season so that whichever season's clothing is easily accessible.
